The Cross Border Healthcare (CBHC) conference

The Cross Border Healthcare (CBHC) conference was organized in Athens, Greece on the 7-9 April 2014. Representatives from Italy, Greece, Malta and Cyprus were invited to participate. The topic of the conference was the EUDirective 2011/24/EU on the application of patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare.

The Conference was opened by a statement from the Greek Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiades, followed by presentations from Greek speakers who focused on the question of what the meaning of the Directive is for patients in the above region. A plenary debate followed, with the objectives to provide a clear overview of the scope of the directive and its application and to highlight its strengths, but also potential barriers in implementation.

In the afternoon sessions of the second day, the discussion  focused  on the role of National Contact Points (NCP) and the resulting  working groups  attempted  to create the framework  of  the  ‘’ideal’’ Contact point  and the role of the patients in the effective evolution of National Contact Points.

On the third day there was a presentation on the ‘’Quality of Care and Patient Safety’’ with the objective of ensuring understanding of the provisions within the directive and to discuss European reference networks and their contribution to improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment.

In the final session of the third day, presentations focused on the role of patient organizations in securing effective implementation of the Directive. The objectives of this session were to outline possible actions based on previous experience, to develop a plan of action and to support and ensure commitment of the participants to pursue this plan and be part of an informal network of evaluation.

The conference was closed after representatives from all four countries made some final comments and declared their ‘’Take home ‘’ Message.
